Executive Director Position Announcement
Hoyt Arboretum Friends Foundation (HAF) seeks a collaborative and dynamic leader motivated by their love of nature and our mission to maintain and improve Hoyt Arboretum and its collection for all people through advocacy, resources, awareness and education.
HAF’s new dynamic and inspirational leader will develop organizational vision and strategies and create new business and growth opportunities in collaboration with our Board and members to position Hoyt Arboretum as a national leader in protecting endangered plant species and ensuring free access to one of the country’s largest plant collections.
HAF’s new leader will deepen our Board membership pipeline, build our brand awareness, and develop innovative membership and community engagement models to hit our growth targets and expand multi-generational and multicultural relationships.
The Executive Director is critical to our success and future growth and will broaden our annual development plan to build our endowment and expand program activities. Key to our financial stability is creative hands-on management of the Forage in the Forest annual fundraising event (one of the best functions of the entire year), proven financial management skills, and experience in maintaining and building major donor relationships.
HAF’s new leader will have the opportunity to lead expansion of our community education programs and be the spokesperson for an important community asset. This is a special opportunity for someone seeking an exciting, challenging and important non-profit leadership position.
HAF’s Executive Director serves as the face of the organization and is responsible for general management and oversite including fiscal management, friend- and fundraising, strategic planning, operations, board and member relations, volunteers, communications, the Visitor Center and store, programs and overall execution of the mission.
The Executive Director will build on HAF’s recent successes and continue to improve and grow the organization.

Staff: 2.5 FTE Starting Salary Range: $72,000-77,000 DOE plus benefits Budget: $425,000 in 2015
About Hoyt Arboretum and Hoyt Arboretum Friends Foundation
Hoyt Arboretum is part of Portland Parks & Recreation Bureau’s park system and is Portland’s museum of living trees. Located in Washington Park, Hoyt Arboretum grows and exhibits 6,000 trees and plants from around the world on 189 acres while educating our community and conserving vitally important plant bio-diversity.
Hoyt Arboretum Friends (HAF) is a membership-based, nonprofit organization working in partnership with the City of Portland Parks & Recreation Bureau and Hoyt Arboretum’s curator, Martin Nicholson, to manage Hoyt Arboretum. HAF supports Hoyt Arboretum by operating the Visitor Center and Nature Store; managing volunteer support programs; offering education programs through tours, classes, brochures and activities to diverse ages and audiences; growing membership and raising funds for capital projects, maintenance and improvements to Hoyt Arboretum.
Since 2011 HAF has improved its financial position from a deficit to a surplus budget and has increased membership from 200 to over 800. HAF has built a six-month reserve and has the opportunity to add significantly to its endowment or programs in 2017.
The Executive Director serves on the Board of Explore Washington Park, is the primary contact for the Portland Parks & Recreation Bureau and works as an equal partner with Martin Nicholson, Hoyt Arboretum’s curator and Portland Parks employee, to manage and improve the arboretum.
Summary of Responsibilities
• Provides leadership to ensure Hoyt Arboretum has the necessary resources to successfully fulfill its mission through general and allocated fundraising, communicating with the public, growing membership, building relationships and producing the Forage in the Forest annual fundraising event.
• Working closely with the Board, the ED develops policies and strategies for the organization and holds primary responsibility for development and implementation of the strategic plan.
• Ensures development and delivery of educational, public, and outreach programs.
• Is the chief spokesperson for HAF and represents the organization and its mission to city government, Portland Parks & Recreation Bureau, Explore Washington Park and other key constituencies including the media, neighborhood associations, and affiliate non-profit organizations inside and outside Washington Park.
