Garden Conservancy Open Days

Spend the day visiting 6 private gardens in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, June 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m

Admission to each private garden is $5.
Open Days are rain or shine, and no reservations are required.



Benefit Flower Sale at New Seasons Markets

 Hoyt Arboretum Friends, in collaboration with Leach Botanical Garden and Berry Botanic Garden will be at area New Seasons Markets in August 2008. Funds received from plant and flower sales will benefit these three urban gardens of Portland.  Come, meet our volunteers and learn more about Hoyt Arboretum-- a place for wonder and discovery, exercise and rest and unparalleled rejuvenation

 

Program: Urban Gardens plant sale at New Seasons Markets

Participants:  Hoyt Arboretum, Berry Botanic Garden, Leach Botanical Garden

Time: Noon to 4 pm

When:  Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17, 2008

Where: Portland Metro Area New Seasons Markets

 

Hoyt Arboretum at OHSU Farmers Market

Hoyt Arboretum will have a table at the August 19 OHSU Farmers Market.  The OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University) Farmers Markets will occur on Tuesdays between the end of May until the 1st week in October. The focus of the market is to reinforce an increased understanding held by university and hospital staff members of the importance of the greater picture of health that includes care for the environment. Visit the Hoyt table to pick up brochures on our over 12 miles of family-trails in Washington Park.  Come and learn ways that you and your family can stay healthy through exercise!

 

As part of the Sunday Classes and Celebrations at Joy Creek Nursery, Hoyt Curator Dan Moeller will be speaking on Trees for the Home Garden:

Autumn is an ideal time to plant trees. Let an expert introduce you to a variety of superior trees for smaller gardens. Follow his tips for planting and for follow up care.

Dan Moeller, as curator for Hoyt Arboretum, oversees 185 acres and 8000 botanical and horticultural collections. He also acts as a consultant for both the Arboretum and Portland Parks and Recreation. Collaborating with other botanic gardens and arboreta worldwide, Dan has been instrumental in building a world-class collection of plants with educational, research, and horticultural value. An engaging speaker and media figure, Dan teaches a wide-range of audiences about plant maintenance, design, conservation, and diversity. Previous to his years at Hoyt Arboretum, Dan managed the 18 display gardens and 3 conservatories of the Chicago Botanic Garden. His many responsibilities included the supervision and education of "at risk" teens through the College First Program and the development of horticultural courses for the public. Dan graduated from the University of Colorado with a B.A. in Environmental, Population and Organismic Biology and from Portland State University with an M.A. in Public Administration with a specialization in Nonprofit Management and Natural Resource Policy.

North American Rock Garden Society Events

The Columbia-Willamette Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society
meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center in Washington Park. They are free and open to the public.  Here are highlights of upcoming meetings:

Berry Botanic Garden

Tai Chi in the Garden

The serenity of the Berry Botanic Garden is a perfect environment for the moving meditation, Tai Chi. This gentle martial art is invaluable for reducing stress and increasing energy, creativity and overall well-being. In this series of four classes participants can easily learn the basics of this powerful Chinese system of exercise in the relaxing and comfortable setting of our indoor Pamplin Center with instructor Mark Hodges.

Introduction to Grafting Maples

Tobey Chadsey of Meadowcroft Farm has grafted thousands of conifers and Japanese maples during his 24 years as a nurseryman. In this hands-on class you will learn the techniques, tools and art of grafting, demonstrated on maples. Grafting knives will be available for purchase at the wholesale price of $30; sheaths for $8. Bring your own knife if you have one. Other materials will be provided.
