Plant Collections

A description of some of the major collections at the Hoyt Arboretum.

Today the Arboretum’s collections contain over 8,000 specimens representing more than 111 plant families, 1600 taxa, and 1000 true species.  There are plants from every continent at Hoyt Arboretum.  Much of the emphasis remains in the conifer collections with over 240 species of the world’s cone-bearing trees.  Also of special note are the magnolia and maple collections.  Hoyt’s maple collection is being considered for inclusion as part of worldwide maple conservation effort sponsored by the North American Plant Conservation Consortium.

Planting of new trees to fulfill the Duncan Plan’s originally envisioned 501 species and then further additions as botanical science and horticulture has advanced in the intervening decades, has been going on continuously since 1931.   With additional resources from both the public sector and Hoyt Arboretum Friends, more planting has occurred in the last five years then in any of the preceding decades, other than the original planting spree of the 1930’s.  Since 2001, over 3,000 new plantings have been made at the Arboretum, adding to existing plant families while increasing species diversity and pedigree, and replacing trees that were coming to the end of their life cycle.
