July Highlights
A list of interesting and/or blooming plants in the Hoyt Arboretum in July.
Visitor’s Center:
Eschscholzia californica (California Poppy) - Vibrant orange flowers.
Asclepias speciosa (Silkweed) – Bulbs of pale pink stars are the way to a bee’s heart.
Beschorneria decosteriana – A striking six foot stalk of red and green from Mexico
Parking Lot:
Stachys cooleyae (Cooley’s Hedge-Nettle) -
Thisflower’s origami-like leaves show subtle perfection
in nature.
Aruncus dioicus (Goat’s Beard) – Fuzzy white flowers.
Magnolia Trail:
Holodiscus discolor (Ocean-Spray) – Fluffy clouds of
white.
Epilobium angustifolium (Fireweed) – Surprisingly beautiful blooms from a common weed.
Winter Garden:
Erica cinerea ‘C.D. Eason’ (Bell Heather) –
Quaint little pink cone-shaped flowers.
Cherry Trail:
Sorbus aucuparia (European Mountain Ash) – Orange
berries make these trees stand out from the rest.
Hawthorn Trail:
Acer palmatum ‘Ornatum’ (Red Laceleaf Japanese
Maple) – Look for mushrooms taking refuge underneath
this burgundy umbrella.
Pine Trail:
Araucaria araucana (Monkey Puzzle Tree)- Watch
out, it’s sharp!
Beech Trail:
Ptelea trifoliata (Hop Tree) – These trees are rich in
green coin-shaped seeds.
Dogwood Trail:
Cornus kousa ‘Rosabella’ (Kousa Dogwood)- Pale pink
flowers show fragile beauty.

Vietnam Memorial:
Rosa rugosa (Japanese Rose)- Lovely pink roses.
