Why do leaves turn — and why do some trees blaze scarlet while their neighbors simply go gold? As the maple collections put on their October show, we’ll unpack the chemistry and strategy behind autumn color and visit Hoyt Arboretum’s most reliable performers. This will be a slow-paced stroll on maintained trails; bring a camera or a sketchbook if you would like!

About the Instructor: Ruth Williams is a consulting arborist and plant enthusiast with degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture from UC Davis. Working as a local consulting arborist, she helps preserve trees for future generations. She teaches and guides interpretive hikes on a wide variety of ecological subjects.
