Trees have different shaped leaves, varying textures of bark, and a variety of branching patterns. Have you ever thought about diving deeper into what makes trees unique and how their characteristics help with their identification? If you’re curious about increasing your tree identification knowledge, join arborist Casey Clapp of the podcast Completely Arbortrary, to learn the basics and beyond of how trees grow.

May 3rd – Growing Roots: The Fundamentals of Tree ID
Learn the fundamentals of tree identification in the classroom. We’ll learn terms and characteristics of defining tree structures, and orient ourselves to reference books and other resources that will help us on the trails in the rest of this series.
May 17th – Broadening Skills: Practice Identifying Broadleaf Trees
Practice identifying the broadleaf trees of the Arboretum using the fundamentals learned in week 1. Learn to identify common broadleaf trees in our area and build on the basics of knowing what to look for when it comes to tree parts. We’ll be outdoors and on the trails this week, so dress for the weather!
May 31st – Building Confidence: Practice Identifying Coniferous Trees
Practice identifying the coniferous trees of the Arboretum using the fundamentals and skills built in weeks 1 and 2. Learn to identify common conifers in our area, and build confidence with looking for and distinguishing parts of coniferous trees. We’ll be outdoors and on the trails this week, so dress for the weather!
About the instructor: Casey Clapp is the co-creator and co-host of the podcast Completely Arbortrary, a weekly podcast about trees and other related topics. An ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, Casey is a modern naturalist focused on education and science communication centered around trees and their impact on the world around them. He specializes in urban forestry and arboriculture and is passionate about sharing his love of trees with people.
