In this class, learn the fundamentals of drawing while immersing yourself in Hoyt Arboretum. Whether you are a drawing beginner, want to strengthen your foundations, or tell people you “can’t even draw a stick figure,” you are welcome in this class. Over the course of two and a half hours and about 1 mile, we will cover topics like line control, proportion, form, value, and composition, while discussing botany, ecology, and plant evolution. Leave the class with the confidence to start a sketchbook, draw your travels, or take more art classes with Hoyt Arboretum Friends.
- Space is limited; please register online
- Registration closes Saturday, July 26th at 4:00pm
- Class details will be emailed closer to the program date
About the Instructor: Meriwether Schroeer-Smith is lifelong visual artist and illustrator living in Portland, Oregon. In addition to selling original artwork locally, Meriwether is passionate about teaching art and using creation as a way to engage with nature and local communities. Using her education in Environmental Science and Botany, she develops curricula around foundational drawing exercises to demonstrate educational topics. She has taught scientific field sketching at West Yellowstone School, presented art-integrated tree ID lessons in schools, and led art programming for all ages in Missouri Headwaters and Madison Buffalo Jump State Parks in her home state of Montana. Meriwether believes that art is not an innate talent that some are born with, but rather a skill that can be cultivated through practice.
