Join environmental educator Roland Begin for a 90 minute (~1 mile) easy-going walk through ‘forest time’ to learn about the importance of fire (and other disturbances) to the ecology of different types of PNW forests. We’ll look at specific trees and plants which are indicators of ecological succession that follow such events. Plus we’ll discuss likely climate change impacts on PNW forests.

Public tours are held rain or shine. Dress for the weather, and wear comfortable shoes for walking on trails. The route is approximately 1 mile and will include some ups and downs along the way. Most of the tour route will travel on well-graded packed dirt or gravel trails.

Masks are not required for outdoor programs in Portland parks but are encouraged indoors. If you are feeling any COVID-19 symptoms, please stay safe and stay home.

Fire and Forest Health in the Pacific Northwest is a free guided tour, but registration is required (group size is limited). Meet at the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center.
