What do magnolias, bay trees, buttercups, along with the barberries have in common? They are all considered as some of the first-evolved flowering plants. Sometimes referred to as the basal angiosperms and eudicots, these plants have several primitive characteristics that we can easily observe and identify at the family level. Join us as we explore the flowers of these plants in the classroom, then on a short walk through the arboretum. Be prepared for the weather with good walking shoes, rain gear, etc.

About the instructor: Dr. Mandy Tu is the Plant Taxonomist & Herbarium Curator at the Hoyt Arboretum. In this position, she is responsible for collecting voucher specimens and verifying the identity of the trees within the arboretum and is often asked to identify plants by natural area managers in the Portland region. She has a B.S. in Botany from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California at Davis. Mandy has taught many plant identification courses and workshops for botanical professionals and plant enthusiasts.

Class size is limited to 12 participants; registration is required. Recommended for ages 15 and up.
There are no refunds for cancellations within two weeks of the class date.
