Hoyt Arboretum Friends hosts Stewardship Crews for corporations, schools, and other community groups looking to get out of their usual workflow, connect with nature, and make a difference. With 189 acres, 12 miles of trails, and over 6,000 trees representing 2,300 species and varieties from around the world, we rely on the support of volunteers like you to keep our park beautiful and thriving. It’s also a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about and care for rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world.
What You’ll Do
Stewardship Crews help out with a variety of hands-on tasks including weeding and mulching, invasive species removal, brush clearing, trail work, and more. Volunteers will often be working off trail on uneven terrain. Lifting, kneeling, bending, digging, and use of various tools are a part of every stewardship crew, but volunteers are encouraged to do the tasks that they are comfortable with. Events take place rain or shine. Volunteer parking passes, gloves, tools, and onsite training are all provided.

Request a Stewardship Group Date
Volunteer Stewardship Crews take place on weekday mornings, from 9am to 12pm. Tuesdays are preferred and are typically easiest to book, but we can work with your group to find a day that best fits your schedule. The best months to book Stewardship Crews are March through November, with no crews held in August due to hot weather. We ask that you book your crew at least 4 weeks in advance. Submit a request by clicking the button below.
After you submit your private group volunteer request, our team will follow up with details and next steps to help you prepare for a great volunteer experience.
Parking & Getting Here
Hoyt Arboretum has two pay-to-park lots located near the Visitor Center. We will provide parking passes for volunteers to use day-of, so they do not have to pay for parking. There is also limited free parking available along SW Fairview Blvd. Washington Park is also conveniently located off the MAX Red and Blue lines.
We strongly encourage carpooling or taking public transit due to our limited space, especially for larger groups. Click here for more details on planning your visit.
