Seasonal Highlights

Did you know that Hoyt Arboretum houses a collection of more than 8,000 trees and plants representing over 1,000 species and more than 600 cultivars from around the world? This collection is very accessible to scientists, students and others involved in research and study since Hoyt Arboretum is located just 2 miles west of downtown Portland and can be reached easily by car, bus or light rail.

Cotinus obovatus
American Smoke Tree

Perhaps displaying the best range of fall color, this native of the Appalachians, is also well suited to the pacific northwest.  This is a drought tolerant shrub that can grow to 20’.  Its range of color includes reds, pinks, oranges, and yellows.  This shurb can be found off of the Cherry trial, just before the junction with Wildwood Trail.  Make sure to look nearby for interesting hybrid cultivars, ‘Grace’ and ‘Golden Spirit.’
